What Can Broadway Learn From Carrie Bradshaw?

A strange thing happened at movie theatres across the country on the weekend of May 30th; groups of women dressed up, gathered in groups, and lined up to see the highly anticipated Sex and the City: The Movie. Then an even stranger thing occurred: the next weekend the same thing happened.

Given the recent success of Sex and the City: The Movie, one wonders why a musical or play geared to this demographic of women hasn’t graced the Broadway stage. The movie brought out an exodus of women most of whom had not taken the time to see a movie in theatres in over six months. These women tend to be ages 20 to 40 with excess incomes, education, cultural appreciation, and the willingness to spread the word on products that they enjoy. Isn’t this the type of consumer that Broadway could benefit from? Yet, one looks at the landscape of the current collection of Broadway shows, and no where does one see female characters that reflect the experiences of modern American women. Continue reading

It’s summertime and that means vacations, the beach, barbeques, and the ubiquitous Summer-To-Do-Lists that show up in every magazine, and daytime talk show. We’ve decided to follow the crowd (hey, theatre kids can be conformists too occasionally) and come up with a Summer Theatrical Reading List. So, if you’re sun bathing in Central Park and need a book so people think you have brains and beauty, or if you need something to do besides watch another episode of Living Lohan while you sit in front of the air conditioner, here are some suggestions from The 8th Avenue Observer.
